WUF12 Training Event “Learning sustainable and integrated municipal solid waste management systems through Fukuoka Method” (November 2024)

Fukuoka City participated in the 12th World Urban Forum (WUF12) held in Cairo, Egypt, November 4-8, 2024, and hosted a training event on the Fukuoka Method on Wednesday, November 6.

The Forum is the world's largest international conference on urban issues organized by UN-HABITAT. More than 25,000 participants from 182 countries, including national and local governments, businesses, and academic institutions, gathered to discuss sustainable urbanization.

How can the “Fukuoka Method,” a semi-aerobic landfill structure, an environmental technology originating in Fukuoka, contribute to the improvement of landfills that emit fires, foul odors, and greenhouse gases such as methane gas?

More than 50 engineers from around the world who attended the event learned about the technical features of the Fukuoka Method through lectures by experts and introductions of actual cases in Myanmar and Ethiopia. A workshop was also held where participants identified issues at landfills in their own countries and discussed ways to improve them with the experts.
