Omicron strain vaccines Q&A)

We have compiled a list of frequently asked questions on the omicron vaccines.
Source: Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (as of October 12, 2022).

Q1: How many doses of the omicron vaccine will I be given?)

You will receive one dose.
Depending on your vaccination history, this may be administered for your third, fourth or fifth dose. Regardless, the omicron vaccine is currently only given once.

Q2: Do I need to get the BA.4-5 vaccine after the BA.1-vaccine?)

At present, if you have completed the 1st and 2nd doses of your vaccination, you should receive one dose of the omicron vaccine (BA.1 or BA.4-5). Subsequent vaccinations will be considered by the government based on scientific research.

Q3: Which vaccine is more effective, the BA.1 vaccine or the BA.4-5 vaccine?

Current research suggests that, when comparing the immune-stimulating properties of the vaccines, there is no significant difference between the BA.1 and BA.4-5 omicron strains when compared to the difference between conventional strains and the omicron strains that are currently prevalent.
Regardless of the type of omicron strain (BA.1 and BA.4-5), the omicron vaccine is more effective than the conventional vaccine in the current epidemic situation. The omicron vaccine contains components of the omicron strain and previous strains of the coronavirus. These components make it more effective against future mutations.

Q4: Why is the omicron vaccine not given for the 1st or 2nd dose?)

The omicron vaccine has been clinically tested and approved as an additional vaccination by the Regulatory Affairs Authority.
If new data is obtained in the future, the omicron vaccine may be approved for use in the 1st and 2nd doses.

Q5: I have just contracted COVID-19. When can I be vaccinated against omicron?

Vaccination is possible as long as you have recovered clinically. Please consult your doctor if you are considering vaccination.
