Come See the New and Improved Marine World Uminonakamichi

Marine World Uminonakamichi, the only aquarium in Fukuoka Prefecture, reopened on Apr. 12 after undergoing renovations. Previously, the aquarium showcased fish and other ocean life from the Tsushima Strait, but the revamped displays cast a wider net, focusing on all of the oceans around Kyushu. Most of the tanks were replaced or repaired, and new video and audio accompaniment was adopted.

Meanwhile, the popular dolphin and seal show pool was also upgraded. A new seal stage was added, which aims to make the seal shows even more up close and personal. The view of Hakata Bay from the pool is even better than before, and it makes you feel like the pool is an extension of the nearby ocean. At the newly installed Penguin Hill, you can get an up close look of the adorable penguins as they hang out on land and swim in the water.

The interior of the entire facility has been renovated to evoke the feeling of a resort, and nothing represents this better than the Central Garden. Built inside a five-story (15m) alcove, the relaxing garden features ample green spaces and a waterfall accented by natural light. The corridors that guide you through the facility are all black, which makes for a mystical atmosphere, but there’s actually a practical reason for the color scheme: it reduces the animals’ stress because it makes the human visitors harder for them to see.

Last but not least, the restaurant in front of the dolphin show pool and the souvenir shop also received facelifts. Meanwhile, the Hakata Bay Panorama Plaza inside Uminonakamichi Seaside Park will open in April, and Uminonakamichi Fireworks 2017, a fireworks extravaganza featuring Japan’s top firework artists, is scheduled for May 13.  All eyes are on this event, which will be the first of its kind to be held in Fukuoka.

新しくなったマリンワールド海の中道

　福岡県で唯一の水族館として市民に親しまれてきたマリンワールド海の中道が、リニューアルを終えて４月12日に再オープンしました。これまで“対馬海流”をテーマに魚類展示を行ってきましたが、リニューアル以降は“九州の海”に展示テーマを広げ、九州各地の変化に富んだ海の生態を学べる場所になりました。ほぼすべての水槽を新設・改修して、映像や音響にも工夫を凝らしています。

　リニューアル前から人気だったイルカやアシカのショープールもグレードアップ。観客に近い場所にアシカのステージを新設し、愛嬌あるアシカのショーがより身近に感じられます。また博多湾を一望できるプールはさらに見晴らしがよくなり、海との一体感がより感じられる場所になりました。新たに設けられた「ペンギンの丘」は、愛くるしいペンギンが陸上や水中で暮らす姿が間近で観察できます。

　館内の雰囲気も身近なリゾート施設を目指して一新。その象徴がエントランスにある「滝と緑のセンターガーデン」です。ビルの５階に相当する高さ15メートルの吹き抜け空間は、柔らかな自然光が差し込む中に水と緑が配置された居心地のいい空間。水槽を観覧する通路は黒を基調とした幻想的な雰囲気ですが、展示されている生物からは人間が見えにくくなるというストレス軽減効果もあります。

　イルカのショープールを目の前に食事が楽しめるレストランや、オリジナル商品のあるスーベニアショップも充実。またマリンワールドが位置する海の中道海浜公園では博多湾パノラマ広場が４月に開園し、「海の中道芸術花火2017～花火と音楽のマリアージュ～」が５月13日に開催されます。福岡で初めての開催となる芸術花火は新しいスタイルの花火大会として注目を集めています。
