Asian Tourists Present Opportunities and Challenges

Overseas tourists are visiting Fukuoka in increasing numbers every year. Fukuoka Airport now has 16 regularly scheduled international routes with 294 flights a week. These air routes link us to 16 cities overseas, primarily in China, Taiwan, South Korea, and Southeast Asia. Including Japanese, a total of approximately 2,255,000 travelers used the airport in the 2007 business year. Furthermore, in 2007 about 844,000 travelers, both Japanese and foreign, used the Port of Hakata terminal to board ferries and high-speed jetfoils to Busan, South Korea.

These statistics demonstrate that Fukuoka City has caught the attention of the rest of Asia. In fact, this year already 23 cruise ships from China have visited the Port of Hakata in Fukuoka City. An estimated 26,000 tourists will arrive on these ships from early April through October. There are several reasons for the growing interest in Fukuoka City. First, it takes only one day by ship from Shanghai, China. Second, we are the closest of the major Japanese cities to the Chinese mainland. Finally, the proximity of the port to such shopping areas as Tenjin and Canal City also adds to the convenience.

The cruise ship Rhapsody of the Seas called on the Port of Hakata six times from April 5 to May 4 this year. The ship departs from Shanghai on cruises lasting five to seven days, and also stops at Cheju Island in South Korea. The 78,491-ton ship has a capacity of 2,435 passengers. With the exception of the Asuka II, it is the largest cruise ship to call on the port. The welcoming ceremony on the ship's first call at the port featured the Hakata Golden Lion Dance and Drums and geisha performing traditional arts. After passing through customs, the tourists boarded buses for the Tenjin district to visit a special duty-free square, a site selling Hakata ningyo (dolls), and other destinations. The visits of these cruise ships have spurred more retail merchants to allow purchases using the Ginren Card, a credit card issued by Chinese banks.

Already, cruise ships are scheduled to visit the port 24 times in 2009. Industry observers think there will be an upsurge in Chinese overseas travel after the Beijing Olympics, which is expected to have a substantial impact on the Fukuoka City economy. Given the recent influx of visitors, Fukuoka could greatly benefit by improving its hospitality and services.

大型クルーズ船、ぞくぞくと博多港に寄港

　年々福岡を訪れる外国人客は増えています。現在、国際定期航空路線は全部で16路線、1週間に294便*が発着しています。空路で結んでいるのは中国、台湾、韓国および東南アジアを中心に16都市、2007年度の利用旅客数は225万5千人（日本人含む）。また博多港国際ターミナルから釜山港を結ぶフェリーと高速船の利用客は年間約84万4千人（2007年・日本人含む）で、福岡市は今、アジアから注目されている都市だといえるでしょう。

　そして2008年、福岡市の博多港に中国発着のクルーズ客船が23回寄港することになりしました。4月初旬から10月まで、およそ合計で2万6千人が訪れました。福岡市は中国・上海から船で約1日で到着、日本の主要都市の中でもっとも近く、また博多港から天神やキャナルシティなど買い物に便利な都心が近くて便利だと、注目を集めているのです。

　上海を出発し、福岡や韓国・済州島などを５～7泊の日程で巡るクルーズ船「ラプソディ・オブ・ザ・シーズ号」が2008年4月5日から5月4日にかけて計6回、博多港に寄港しました。船の大きさは78,491トン、定員2,435人で、博多港に入港するクルーズ船としては「飛鳥Ⅱ」を抜いて過去最大の大きさでした。歓迎式典では、博多金獅子太鼓の披露や芸者さんたちのお出迎えなどで歓迎ムードを演出しました。クルーズ客は入国審査を済ませ、バスに乗り換えて天神に出向き、免税品の特設広場や博多人形売り場などを訪れました。このクルーズ船寄港をきっかけに、中国で普及している「銀れんカード」を導入する流通施設も増えたようです。

　今年も４月から10月まで定員1,766人の「コスタ・クラシカ号」が計16回寄港するのをはじめ、外国クルーズ船が計24回寄港する予定です。北京オリンピック以降、中国人の海外旅行は急増するといわれており、福岡市の経済活動に及ぼす波及効果は大きいと思われます。おもてなしの都市として、さらにサービス向上を図っていきたいですね。
