The Fukuoka Asian Art Museum
The world’s first museum dedicated to Asian art

Ten years ago, on March 6, 1999, the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum opened in the Hakata Riverain Center Building, next to the Hakata-za playhouse. It is the first art museum in the world to systematically collect and display modern Asian art. The collection includes nearly 2,300 pieces in various styles from 21 countries and territories in Asia, and the quality of its collection makes the museum a world-class institution.

Asian art is currently attracting the world’s attention, but there has been interest in the genre in Fukuoka City for some time. This interest dates back to 1979, when the Fukuoka Art Museum in Ohori Park opened. An exhibition of Asian art commemorated the museum’s opening, and they have held similar exhibitions every five years since then. The Fukuoka Asian Art Museum has collected modern works of art from Asia, and invited contemporary artists to create works, and then purchased them. They have also placed in their collection objects created by artisans and technicians who cannot be called artists.

For example, they display rickshaw art from Bangladesh, in which people draw portraits of film stars, animals, flowers, and other scenes on the vehicles. The rickshaw itself has become an art object, and of course people in Bangladesh use them for transportation. This display can be seen in the sculpture lounge at the seventh floor café.

In addition to the commemoration when the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum was opened, the Asia Exhibition is conducted on a large scale every three years under the name of the Fukuoka Asian Art Triennial. This year, the fourth exhibit will be held from September 5 to November 23 to commemorate the museum’s 10th anniversary. Full details are not yet available, but the museum is sparing no effort to make it a success.

The museum has another unmissable attraction that will run until July 21: a retrospective of the museum’s 10 years entitled Playback 1999-2009. It will include a chronology, which will look at past exhibits and the works of artists who have lived in Fukuoka with a slide show.

世界で初(はじ)めての福岡(ふくおか)アジア美術館(びじゅつかん

　今(いま)から10年前(ねんまえ)の1999年(ねん)3月(がつ)6日(にち)、演劇(えんげき)専用(せんよう)劇場(げきじょう)「博多座(はかたざ)」の隣(となり)にある博多(はかた)リバレインセンタービルに福岡(ふくおか)アジア美術(びじゅつ)館(かん)が誕生(たんじょう)しました。アジアの近(きん)現代(げんだい)美術(びじゅつ)を系統(けいとう)的(てき)に収集(しゅうしゅう)し展示(てんじ)する世界(せかい)で初(はじ)めての美術(びじゅつ)館(かん)です。アジア21カ国(かこく)・地域(ちいき)の多様(たよう)なジャンルの約(やく)2,300点(てん)に及(およ)ぶコレクションは質量(しつりょう)ともに世界(せかい)に自慢(じまん)できるものとなりました。

　アジア美術(びじゅつ)は現在(げんざい)、世界(せかい)各国(かっこく)から注目(ちゅうもく)を集(あつ)めるようになりましたが、福岡市(ふくおかし)ではずっと以前(いぜん)からアジア美術(びじゅつ)に着目(ちゃくもく)していたのです。それは、大濠(おおほり)公園(こうえん)内(ない)にある福岡市(ふくおかし)美術(びじゅつ)館(かん)が開館(かいかん)した1979年(ねん)までさかのぼります。開館(かいかん)記念(きねん)展(てん)として「アジア美術(びじゅつ)展(てん)」を開催(かいさい)、それからほぼ5年(ねん)ごとにアジア美術(びじゅつ)展(てん)を行(おこな)って近(きん)現代(げんだい)のアジア美術(びじゅつ)作品(さくひん)を購入(こうにゅう)し、現代(げんだい)作家(さっか)たちに制作(せいさく)してもらった作品(さくひん)も含(ふく)めて収集(しゅうしゅう)してきました。また、美術(びじゅつ)作家(さっか)とは呼(よ)ばれない職人(しょくにん)や技術者(ぎじゅつしゃ)などさまざまな作(つく)り手(て)たちによる造形物(ぞうけいぶつ)をコレクションの中(なか)に加(くわ)えていったのです。現在(げんざい)、福岡(ふくおか)アジア美術(びじゅつ)館(かん)では、たとえばバングラデシュのリキシャアート、これは日本(にほん)でいうところの人力車(じんりきしゃ)に映画(えいが)スターや動物(どうぶつ)、草花(くさばな)などが描(か)き込(こ)まれたものがコレクションされています。リキシャそのものが作品(さくひん)であり、バングラデシュではもちろんそれに人(ひと)が乗(の)って走(はし)っています。この作品(さくひん)は7階(かい)のカフェ「アジカフェ」がある彫刻(ちょうこく)ラウンジで見(み)ることができますよ。

「アジア美術(びじゅつ)展(てん)」は福岡(ふくおか)アジア美術(びじゅつ)館(かん)の開館(かいかん)と同時(どうじ)に「福岡(ふくおか)アジア美術(びじゅつ)トリエンナーレ」と名称(めいしょう)を改(あらた)め、3年(ねん)ごとに大規模(だいきぼ)な展覧会(てんらんかい)を行(おこな)っています。今年(ことし)は10周年(しゅうねん)を記念(きねん)して4回目(かいめ)となる美術(びじゅつ)展(てん)が9月(がつ)5日(にち)から11月(がつ)23日(にち)まで開催(かいさい)、詳(くわ)しい情報(じょうほう)は近日中(きんじつちゅう)に九州(きゅうしゅう)産業(さんぎょう)大学(だいがく)の制作(せいさく)による新(しん)サイトで公開(こうかい)されますが、福岡(ふくおか)アジア美術(びじゅつ)館(かん)が総力(そうりょく)を挙(あ)げて取(と)り組(く)むことは間違(まちが)いありません。また去(さ)る3月(がつ)6日(にち)の開館(かいかん)10周年(しゅうねん)記念日(きねんび)より「プレイバック1999－2009」と題(だい)して、これまでの展覧会(てんらんかい)や福岡(ふくおか)に滞在(たいざい)して作家(さっか)たちが作(つく)った作品(さくひん)などを振(ふ)り返(かえ)る年表(ねんぴょう)やスライドショーを7月(がつ)21日(にち)まで行(おこな)っていますのでお見逃(みのが)しなく！
