In 1986, Fukuoka City enacted the legislation that focused on the urban landscape. The impetus came from citizens who valued more comfort and aesthetics in the city. At the same time, the Fukuoka City Urban Beautification Award was established to recognize those who have contributed to the aesthetic landscaping and to foster awareness of the landscape among citizens. What is unique about this award is that not only buildings, structures and monuments are subjects for awards, but also related planning and activities themselves. Kyushu University's old engineering building and maintenance and preservation of the Satoyama forest in Mt. Aburayama have both been recognized.
