The Gokusho area in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka, retains old buildings and historic old temples. Among these temples, Jotenji, Tochoji and Myorakuji Temples are lit up for this event and become a fantasy world. Jotenji Temple, with its beautiful stone garden, is the site of origin for the Hakata Gion Yamakasa, Tochoji Temple is the oldest reijo, or sacred place, said to have been established by Kobo Daishi, and Myorakuji Temple houses many graves of wealthy Hakata merchants. These temples led Fukuoka through its history, and when the buildings and gardens are lit up, they are beautiful yet shrouded in mystery.
