Population

The population of Kyushu and Yamaguchi makes up more than 1/10 of the whole population of Japan, of which the population of Fukuoka metropolitan area accounts for approximately 16%.

Average age and age structure

According to the national census of 2005, the average age of residents in Fukuoka City is 40.3, making it one of the two youngest designated cities alongside Kawasaki City. Furthermore, the age structure of Fukuoka shows that the population of fertile-age and youths account for a large proportion, while the elderly accounts for only a small portion.

Industries and Economy

Fukuoka’s industrial structure mainly centers on the tertiary industry.

As far as the number of businesses is concerned, wholesale, retail, restaurant, and service industries account for a high proportion.

There are 20,440 businesses in the wholesale and retail industries, the number of employees at such stores amount to 187,582, and the annual sales figure is 13.9125 trillion yen (Economic Census 2007), making them the key industries of Fukuoka City. Wholesale stores mainly sell general machinery, electric machinery, foods and beverages, clothing and accessories; while retail stores mainly sell women and children’s clothing, medical supplies, toiletries, sweets, and bread.

The service industry is becoming increasingly important, and it accounts for the second largest proportion of the city’s total output value (in 2006). The main types of service industry are medical, information, and civil engineering.

Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries

Fukuoka City’s urban agriculture consists mainly of cultivation of vegetables and flowers; it is one of the few production bases of agricultural crops in the prefecture. As for forestry, Fukuoka City conserves forests that have many uses such as watershed protection, production of clean air, disaster prevention, and a place for relaxation.

Genkai Sea and Hakata Port are both rich in various types of fish and shellfish, and marine product processing is also thriving. Hakata Port ranked first in the amount of trade of marine products in Japan (in 2008).

Finance

There is a concentration of financial institutions in Fukuoka City. Currency exchange and bank loans are both operated on a large scale. The total amount of outstanding loans is 11.596 trillion yen (as at March 31, 2008), accounting for approximately 40% of the total amount of loans in Kyushu’s seven prefectures. Fukuoka also has the only stock market in Kyushu.

Fukuoka Domestic and International Airport

In 2008, Fukuoka Airport was used by 17.31 million people, ranked the fourth most used airport in Japan. Fukuoka Airport also plays an important role as a central airport for domestic flights as well as a gateway to the Asia-Pacific region. The airport and the city center are connected directly by the subway system (11 minutes to Tenjin Station, 5 minutes to Hakata Station), and it is considered one of the world’s most convenient airports. Fukuoka City also transports 260,000 tons of freight annually, the fourth highest in Japan.

Hakata Port

Hakata Port in Fukuoka City imports rice, furniture, vegetables and fruits, clothing and household goods from all over the world. On the other hand, its exports include recyclable materials such as tires and waste paper, industrial machinery, pharmaceutical products, and car parts. Hakata Port’s economic effects and hiring power account for more than a quarter of the total production as well as number of employment in Fukuoka City, and thus, greatly supports the economy of Kyushu and western Japan.

International maritime container cargo processed at Hakata Port is increasing year to year, processing 760,000 TEU’s in 2008 (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit). There are currently 31 routes between Hakata Port and major ports around the world and Hakata Port welcomes 166 regular international container ships each month (as at February 2009).

Hakata Port also has a large number of domestic and international passenger routes, including a regular direct jetfoil service to nearby Busan Port in South Korea, and Chinese cruise ships also make port of calls at Hakata Port. In 2008, the number of passengers through Hakata Port reached 850,000, making it a key gateway in Kyushu and Asia.
