Before Meiji Period
Yayoi Period (57A.D.) The King of Na of Wa pays a tribute to the Late Han Dynasty and in return, is given a gold seal by the Han Emperor Guang Wu
Yayoi Period(527) Rebellion by Iwai, governor of Tsukushi Province
Suiko 17(609) The name Tsukushi no Oomikotomochi first comes into use.
Jinki 3(726) Yamanoue no Okura becomes Chikuzen no Kami.
Tenpyo-hoji 1 (757) Kushida shrine is said to be completed.
Jogan 7(865) The name Korokan is first used
Engi 1(901) Sugawara No Michizane is exiled to Dazaifu
Oho 1(1161) Taira no Kiyomori is said to start building Sodenominato port in Hakata.
Kenkyu 6(1195) Japan’s first Zen temple, Shofukuji, is founded by Eisai in Hakata, and also establishes a tea field in Mt. Sefuri.
Ninji 3(1242) Xie Guoming from Song Dynasty builds Jotenji temple, and invites Enni to be the founding priest.
Kangen 1(1243) Hakata Gion Yamakasa is said to be held for the first time
Bun'ei 11(1274) Yuan army lands on Imazu
Koan 4(1281) Yuan army attacks again,approaches Hakata
Oei 11(1404) Licensed trade starts.
Kosho 1(1455) Hakata merchant, Soukin, passes away
Tenbun 19(1550) Francisco Xavier comes to Hakata
Eiroku 11(1568) Shimai Soshitsu starts trade with Korea.
Eiroku 12(1569) Most of Hakata is burned down because of war.
Tensho 15(1587) Hideyoshi Toyotomi rebuilds Hakata.
Keicho 5(1600) Kuroda Nagamasa becomes the feudal lord and starts the construction of Fukuoka Castle the following year.
Kan'ei 19(1642) Matsubayashi becomes popular again.
Jokyo 4(1687) Hakata Gion Yamakasa Oiyama race starts.
Tenmei 4(1784) The Gold Seal is unearthed on Shikanoshima
Ansei 5(1858) Kankomaru、Kanrinmaru enter Port of Hakata

Meiji Period
Meiji 4(1871) Han feudal domain system is abolished and Fukuoka prefecture is founded
Meiji 7(1874) A theatre is founded in Higashi Nakasu
Meiji 9(1876) Fukuoka prefectural government office is moved to Tenjin
Meiji 11(1878) Mesamashi Shimbun newspaper is published(Nishinippon Shimbun today)
Meiji 20(1887) The 5th Kyushu-Okinawa Eight Prefecture Exhibition is held in Higashi Nakasu
Meiji 22(1889) Fukuoka becomes a city
Meiji Kyushu Railway starts its operation(between Hakata and Kurume)
Meiji 30(1897) Hakata Dento Electric Light(Higashi Nakasu)opens its business
Meiji 32(1899) Fukuoka telephone exchange office is founded, and local telephone service is opened(with 197 telephones)
Port of Hakata is opened for international trade
Meiji 36(1903) Kyoto Imperial University Fukuoka Medical College is established(Kyushu University Medical School today)
Meiji 39(1906) Gas is first lit by Hakata Gas Company
Meiji 42(1909) Fukuoka City Code is formulated
Meiji 43(1910) Fukuoka Tramway opens up two lines, Idaimae to Nishikouenmae and Gofukumachi to Hakata Station

Taisho Period
Taisho 11(1922) Fukuoka Women’s College (present-day Fukuoka Women’s University) is founded
Taisho 12(1923) Magaribuchi Dam is built. Tap water system in Fukuoka is completed.
Taisho 13(1924) Kyushu Railway is completed
Departments of Law and Literature are opened at Kyushu University
Taisho 14(1925) Tamaya Department Store opens

Showa Period
Showa 2(1927) East-Asia Industrial Expo is held in Ohori
Showa 5(1930) Fukuoka Broadcast Station is founded.
Showa 8(1933) Fukuoka City becomes the largest populated city in Kyushu area (276,458 people)
Showa 11(1936) A large exhibition commemorating the foundation of Hakata Port is held in Suzakiura.
Gannosu International Airport is built.
Iwataya Department Store is opened.
Showa 20(1945) Great Fukuoka air raid on June 19.
Showa 21(1946) Hakata Dontaku Port Festival, Children’s Yamakasa are revived.
Showa 23(1948) The 3rd National Sports Festival is held in Heiwadai
Showa 26(1951) The baseball team “Nisitetsu Lions” is born.
Civil aviation service restarts at Fukuoka (Itazuke) Airport.
Showa 28(1953) Daimaru Department Store opens.
City Zoo (Minami Park) opens.
Showa 31(1956) Fukuoka Bureau of Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) starts broadcasting service.
Showa 32(1957) Sumo Kyushu Tournament becomes official. Sumo Tournament is changed from four to five tournaments a year.
Showa 33(1958) Radio Kyushu Television Station (present-day RKB Mainichi Broadcasting) and Television Nishinippon Corporation are founded.
Showa 34(1959) KBC Kyushu Asahi Broadcasting is founded.
Showa 36(1961) Fukuoka City Master Plan is formulated.
Showa 38(1963) Fukuoka Civic Hall opens.
National Railway Hakata Station is moved to its present location.
Showa 41(1966) Asahi International Marathon becomes Fukuoka International Marathon Championship.
Showa 43(1968) National Kyushu Institute of Design is founded.
Showa 44(1969) Shofukuji Temple is designated a national historic site.
Fukuoka Broadcasting Corporation is founded.
FM Fukuoka starts broadcasting.
Showa 47(1972) Fukuoka City becomes a designated city, and is divided into five wards: Chuo, Hakata, Higashi, Minami, and Nishi.
Fukuoka Airport is returned from the U.S. troops.
Showa 50(1975) Sanyo Shinkansen line is opened, shortening travel time from Fukuoka to Tokyo to 6 hours and 56 minutes.
Population exceeds one million.
Showa 51(1976) 360m long Tenjin underground shopping arcade is completed.
Showa 53(1978) Water supply is restricted for 287 days due to water shortage.
Showa 54(1979) All trams services come to an end.
Fukuoka City Art Museum opens.
Hakata Gion Yamakasa is designated an intangible folk cultural heritage.
Showa 55(1980) Fukuoka City Botanical Garden opens.
Fukuoka expressway (Kashii-Higashihama) is completed.
Showa 56(1981) Fukuoka Sunpalace opens.
Subway Line 1 between Muromi and Tenjin opens.
Fukuoka Kokusai Center is completed.
A part of Uminonakamichi Seaside Park opens.
Showa 57(1982) Construction of Hakata Port facilities and seaside urban development start.
The former Nishi-ku (ward) is divided into three wards: Jonan, Sawara, and Nishi, resulting in seven wards in the whole city altogether.
Government building city council ward is opened.
Showa 58(1983) Subway Line 1 between Meinohama and Hakata opens.
Showa 61(1986) Subway Line 2 between Nakasu Kawabata and Kaizuka opens
Showa 62(1987) Urban Landscape Ordinance is written up.
The 1st City Sports Tournament is held.
Remains of Korokan are found in Heiwadai Baseball Stadium.
Showa 63(1988) Government building government ward is opened.

Heisei 1(1989) Asia Pacific Expo ‘Yokatopia’ for the 100th anniversary of Fukuoka City
Hakata no mori Stadium is built.
Heisei 2(1990) Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize is founded.
Asian Month starts
The 45th National Sports Festival•(Tobiume) is held.
Fukuoka City Museum opens.
Heisei 3(1991) Hakata Port is completed.
Focus on Asia•- Fukuoka International Film Festival begins.
Fukuoka City music and drama studio is opened.
Tokimeki Festa Fukuoka is held.
Heisei 4(1992) Fukuoka City Disaster Prevention Center opens.
Heiwadai Baseball Stadium ceases to host official professional baseball matches.
Heisei 5(1993) Subway Line 1 extends service to Fukuoka Airport
Hakata Port International Terminal is completed on Chuo Futo.
Japan's first stadium with a retractable roof, Fukuoka Dome, is completed.
Heisei 6(1994) Kashii Park Port is partly opened. Kashii Kamome Bridge is opened.
Asia-Pacific City Summit is held.
Heisei 7(1995) Marine Messe Fukuoka is opened.
Uminonakamichi Marine World is opened.
Universiade Fukuoka is held.
Fukuoka City declares itself as an International Sports City.
Fukuoka Brooks promoted to J League, and is renamed as Avispa Fukuoka.
Heisei 8(1996) Fukuoka City Library is opened.
Canal City Hakata is opened.
Heisei 9(1997) Asian Development Bank (ADB) Fukuoka Symposium is held.
UN-HABITAT Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (Fukuoka) is founded.
Heiwadai Stadium closes its doors.
Heisei 10(1998) Hakata Elementary School is founded.
Fresh fish market hall is opened.
Heisei 11(1999) Fukuoka Expressway is connected to Dazaifu IC
Hakata Riverain opens.
Fukuoka Asian Art Museum opens.
Hakata-za Theater opens.
100th Anniversary of Hakata Port.
Fukuoka Daiei Hawks (Fukuoka Softbank Hawks today) becomes number one in Japan for the first time.
Heisei 12(2000) Fukuoka Finance Ministers’ Meeting Kyushu-Okinawa Summit is held.
Heisei 13(2001) Medieval Hakata Exhibition is opened.
RoboCup Japan Open 2001 is held.
The 9th FINA World Swimming Championships is held.
Heisei 14(2002) Fukuoka Expressway is connected to Fukuoka IC.
RoboCup-2002 Fukuoka Busan is held.
Heisei 15(2003) Fukuoka International Congress Center is opened.
Heisei 17(2005) Nanakuma Line connecting Hashimoto and Tenjin-minami is opened.
Earthquake occurs off west of Fukuoka.
The 22nd “Island Flower Dontaku” Urban Greenery Fair is held.
Nenrinpic Fukuoka 2005 is held.
Heisei 18(2006) The 34th International Cross-country race.
International Political Science Association World Congress
Heisei 19(2007) Fukuoka and Busan become sister cities.
Heisei 20(2008) Fukuoka City is voted 17th liveable cities in the world by British magazine, Monocle.
The 1st Japan China and South Korea Summit is held.
