Working Together/Becoming an International City

The Gateway of Asia

As a gateway to Kyushu and Asia, Fukuoka Boasts a Highly Developed and Compact Transportation Network

As the center of Kyushu, Fukuoka has developed a highly concentrated transportation network of airports, seaports, train stations, Shinkansen lines, and highways. With the expected future increase in people and goods arriving in Fukuoka from locations in Japan and abroad, airports and seaports will be playing a more and more important role in maintaining close contact between Fukuoka and the rest of the world, while helping Fukuoka develop into a cosmopolitan city. In 2006, the number of passengers utilizing the airport of Fukuoka reached 18.21 million, while the import and export trade volume reached 1,290,300,000 yen, both ranking 4th in the country. The airport not only operates international air routes to 16 cities, most of them in Asia, it also acts as the gateway to western Japan and the Asia-Pacific region, and is playing an important role in supporting economic activities and cultural exchange in the region of Kyushu and Yamaguchi Prefecture.

Port of Hakata is the only international trade port west of Port of Kobe that has access to long distance ocean liner container routes to North America and Europe; it is also in proximity to the fast-developing region of East Asia. In recent years, there has been a sharp increase in the handling of international seaborne containers. The number of passengers traveling through the port has reached 750,000, the highest in Japan since 1993. Port of Hakata has been playing an increasingly important role in international exchange, especially within Asia.

Fukuoka also boasts an effective transportation network, via the airports, ports, train stations, and highways. Subway and bus services within Fukuoka are also highly developed, catering to the needs of tourists as well as those on business trips.

Today the city of Fukuoka is a combination of antiquity and modernity. It has preserved its two thousand-year cultural history through local heritage sites while simultaneously promoting modern development. Not only does Fukuoka possess an open and simple nature as well as colorful festivals, it is renowned for its arts and vibrant traditional culture. At the same time, it is active in absorbing new ideas and is sensitive to the current trends in music and fashion. Above all, Fukuoka is holding its rich history and culture close to its heart, while taking great leaps in becoming an international city in Asia.
