Fukuoka has been devoted to creating more opportunities where residents can experience culture and art. Fukuoka Art Museum mainly exhibits modern art, as well as ancient pieces related to the Kuroda family. Fukuoka Asian Art Museum is the world’s only art gallery specializing in exhibitions of modern Asian artworks. Fukuoka City Museum exhibits historical relics, such as the Gold Seal excavated from Shikanoshima Island, as well as exhibitions on the culture and history of Fukuoka. Hakata-za Theater, a theater co-founded by persons from administrative, economic, and entertainment backgrounds, runs colorful performances including kabuki, musicals, and plays. Moreover, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum regularly invites Asian artists, researchers, and apprentices to hold artist-in-residence and other various projects, such as communication projects and creative activities. The annual Focus on Asia - Fukuoka International Film Festival was first established in 1991, and shows great films from various Asian countries.
