Urban Greening and Environmental Protection

写真1 Becoming a Green City that Co-Exists with the Environment

The mountains that surround the city, the green belts that extend to the city center, and the parks and rivers scattered around – Fukuoka City is indeed blessed with rich greenery despite being a large-scale city.

However, green areas have been decreasing over the years, and thus protecting Fukuoka’s green fields and creating a good ecological environment have become significant and necessary goals. The situation is at its worst in the city center, where air conditioners and car emissions have resulted in an urban heat island effect. That is why urban greening and waterfront restoration have become such important issues.

As equally important as protection of greenery is environmental protection of Hakata Bay and the like. Wajiro and Imazu Tidal Flats of Hakata Bay are inhabited by various wild birds and other precious wildlife. An ecological park has been built around Wajiro Tidal Flat, which, along with the newly built promenade and a water park, provides people with an opportunity to experience the natural environment of Fukuoka.
