One sign of a successful modern city is a well-planned landscape. Fukuoka is blessed with natural beauty and historical architecture. The blueprint of Fukuoka of the future is an urban landscape that has promenade gardens scattered throughout the city that perfectly fits with its natural surroundings, whilst boasting an abundance of history and tradition. To achieve this goal, Fukuoka has taken a series of steps, among them enacting the Urban Landscape Ordinance in 1987, establishing the Fukuoka Urban Beautification Award to recognize architecture and activities that contribute to a better urban landscape, opening up public spaces for art shows, and setting up sculptures on the streets in order to become a city of sculptures. Moreover, in order to arouse the next generation’s interests and awareness in urban landscape planning, Fukuoka also promotes landscape education to children – related extracurricular reading materials have been published for senior students in elementary schools which will help them think about beauty and comfort of a city.
