This will mark the 20th year for the Focus on Asia Fukuoka International Film Festival. To commemorate this occasion, several special programs will be presented.

Our festival has exhibited every motion picture made by Iranian film maestro, Majid Majidi, since 1996, when the Fukuoka City Public Library Film Archive was created. The Fukuoka City Public Library Film Archive, has since placed every one of Majid Majidi’s motion pictures we have exhibited under its collection. However, up until now, we have been unable to exhibit Majid Majidi’s feature film directional debut, Baduk. By exhibiting this film, the festival will have taken up and addressed every one of Majid Majidi’s motion pictures. For this reason, we will exhibit all of his films under one of our 20th anniversary feature programs.

Our other commemorative program will be entitled “The Fukuoka Audience Award Winners”, an exhibition of four films, which received this award we started in 2006. These commemorative programs are surely unique to our film festival, which has deepened our ties with the Fukuoka City Public Library Film Archive.

In as far as our other programs are concerned, we will exhibit five Japanese films selected by NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema), an organization, which aims to help the growth of Asian films. Additionally, there will be more programs and events to be held in cooperation with our festival than in previous years. If these are included, we will present more than 175 motion pictures this year, the most in our 20-year history.

For our opening film, we will exhibit The Dreamers, the sequel to last year’s immensely popular film, The Rainbow Troops directed by Indonesian film director Riri Riza. We will have Mr. Riri Riza participate in our 20th anniversary symposium, “The Charm of Indonesian Cinema - A Glimpse of Unfamiliar Indonesia”. For our other commemorative symposium, “The Future of Asian Cinema and Film Festivals”, we will invite film director Aoyama Shinji to address the future of Asian films and film festivals.
