Fun for Everyone: Fukuoka’s Athletic Facilities

On December 1, Fukuoka’s newest municipal gymnasium, the Teriha Sekisui House Arena, will open on Island City in Higashi Ward. The four-story building is full of facilities and equipment for a wide range of sports, and the main arena is one of the largest in western Japan. With 15-meter-high ceilings, the gymnasium also meets the standards for various kinds of international athletic competitions. There is seating for roughly 5,000 spectators, affording great views no matter where you sit.

In addition to the main arena, there is a sub-arena, an archery range and a martial arts dojo, each equipped with its own restrooms and changing rooms. The training room features a good selection of workout equipment and a bouldering wall. There is also a multipurpose room and a jogging course, and the entire facility is designed to be fun for everyone, both young and old, disabled or able-bodied.

Sports are the optimal way to stay in shape and relieve stress. Fukuoka City has several municipal facilities that citizens can use at their leisure. In addition to the Fukuoka Citizens Gymnasium in Higashi Park in Hakata Ward, there are gymnasiums in each ward as well as a convenient online reservation system. Several community centers, including Sazanpia Hakata, the Wajiro Regional Community Center and the Seibu Regional Community Center, also have gymnasiums and training rooms.

Furthermore, the Fukuoka City Disabled Persons Sports Center, also known as Sansan Plaza, is located in Minami Ward and aims to provide persons with disabilities a place where they can stay fit and undergo rehabilitation. It is equipped with a gymnasium, table tennis room, archery range and a heated pool (which is open year-round) and offers lessons for a variety of sports, including boccia and other parasports. It is also where para-athletes train for the upcoming Paralympic Games.

誰もが楽しめるスポーツ施設

2018年12月、東区のアイランドシティに福岡市総合体育館がオープンします。地上４階建ての建物には、スポーツを楽しむためのさまざまな設備が揃っています。メインアリーナの広さは西日本でも最大級。天井までの高さは15mで、各種スポーツの国際試合が行われる基準も満たしています。約5000席の観客席は、どの角度からもアリーナが見渡しやすい設計になっています。

メインアリーナのほかにもサブアリーナや弓道場、武道場があり、それぞれに更衣室やトイレを設置するなどの気配りが。また気軽に体を鍛えられるトレーニングルームには、トレーニングマシンなどに加えてボルダリングができる壁も備えています。さまざまな用途に使える多目的室、ジョギングコースなどもあり、子どもから高齢者、障がい者まで、すべての人がスポーツを楽しめるようになっています。

スポーツは健康づくりやストレス解消に最適です。福岡市には身近なところにスポーツ施設が整備されていて、市民がいつでも使えるようになっています。博多区の東公園にある福岡市民体育館をはじめ、各区には体育館があり、便利なネット上の予約システムもあります。「さざんぴあ博多」「コミセンわじろ」「さいとぴあ」といった地域交流センターにも体育館やトレーニングルームが整備されています。

さらに、障がい者の機能回復や健康維持を目的とした福岡市立障がい者スポーツセンター「さん・さんプラザ」が南区にあります。体育館、卓球室、アーチェリー場、一年中利用できる温水プールなどがあり、ボッチャなど障がい者スポーツ独自の競技をはじめ、さまざまなスポーツ教室が開催されています。パラリンピックに出場するような選手もここで練習しているのです。
