Hanahata Horticultural Park

If you like fruit, then Hanahata Horticultural Park is the place for you. Despite being inside the city limits, you can enjoy fruits and flowers year-round. The 14.7-ha park opened in 1984 at the foot of Aburayama in Minami Ward on the former site of the prefecture's horticultural experiment center. It boasts around 1,300 fruit trees spanning 87 varieties.

In the citrus zone, which is home to Satsuma mandarins, pomelo and the like, you can pick mandarin oranges in the fall. The park also grows persimmons, pears, peaches, apples, plums, chestnuts and kiwi fruit. The apple orchard features Newton’s Apple Tree, which was grafted from the tree under which Newton is said to have discovered the law of gravity. Rarer species include almond and walnut trees.

Hanahata Horticultural Park not only grows fruit trees, it also plays an important role in sharing horticultural knowledge and technologies. The park employs full-time experts whom you can call for information or consult with when you visit. If there is anything you want to know about horticulture, don’t hesitate to ask! There’s also a classroom where resident horticulturists offer lectures on how to grow fruit and prune trees.

At the Hanahata Marche shop, you can buy the fresh seasonal fruit grown in the park. The park also hosts sketch competitions and other regular events that are fun for all ages. There is a grassy area with playground equipment for children and an observation deck that affords great views of the city, making the park a great place to spend a lazy day any time of year—not to mention it’s one of the city’s hidden gems for springtime cherry blossom viewing.

花とフルーツにあふれた花畑園芸公園

フルーツが好きな人なら、楽しめること間違いなしの花畑園芸公園。福岡市内にありながら、１年中季節の花やフルーツにあふれた公園です。自然豊かな南区の油山のふもとにあり、福岡県園芸試験場だった14.7ヘクタールの広大な敷地を利用して、1984（昭和59）年に公園としてオープンしました。園内には、みかんをはじめとする87種類、約1300本もの果樹が植えられています。

温州ミカンや晩白柚（ばんぺいゆ）などの柑橘類のエリアでは、秋になると、みかん狩り（抽選）も楽しめます。カキ、ナシ、モモ、リンゴ、ウメ、クリ、キウイフルーツなども栽培されていて、リンゴ園には「ニュートンのリンゴの木」もあります。ニュートンが「万有引力の法則」を発見したと伝わるリンゴの木を接ぎ木したものです。ほかにもアーモンドやクルミといった少し珍しい果実も。

花畑園芸公園には果樹類を栽培するだけでなく、もうひとつ大事な役割があります。園芸に関する知識や技術の普及活動です。園内には専門の技術員が常駐していて、電話による相談に応じたり、来園者の質問に答えてくれます。植物に関することなら、どんな質問でもOKです。また研修室を備えていて、野菜のつくり方や果樹の剪定方法など園芸指導員による講座が開かれています。

園内で収穫された季節の新鮮なフルーツは、売店「花畑マルシェ」で購入することができます。また、スケッチ大会など親子で参加できるイベントも定期的に開催されています。子ども用遊具がある芝生広場、四季折々の花が咲く花壇、福岡市街が一望できる展望台など、のんびり１日を過ごすにはぴったりの場所。春には見事な桜が咲き、隠れたお花見スポットとしても人気があります。
