Fukuoka Growth Next: The City’s Startup Support Center

Fukuoka Growth Next opened this last April inside the former Daimyo Elementary School. The facility aims to support potential entrepreneurs and businesses looking to venture into new areas.

The historic Daimyo Elementary School first opened in 1873, and the current reinforced concrete building, with its retro art deco interior, dates back to 1929. The first floor of the facility is open to the public and houses the Startup Cafe, which offers consultations on business startups, and the DIY Studio, a joint project of a hardware store and an e-commerce company. You can also stop by the cafe in the daytime for cup of coffee or visit the standing bar for some sparkling wine in the evening.

The second and third floors house the offices for startup companies and supporting organizations. The offices were made by dividing up the old classrooms, and company name plates hang in the old hallway, making for a unique atmosphere. A wide range of seminars and workshops are held daily at Fukuoka Growth Next, providing opportunities to meet new people and try new things.

The old Daimyo Elementary School site is an invaluable open space conveniently located in the heart of downtown Fukuoka. Fukuoka Growth Next was intended to be a temporary facility until a decision was made on how to use the land, but, due to the large number of users it has attracted since opening, discussions are now underway to retain the facility’s current function there.

起業を支援するフクオカグロースネクスト

　今年４月、中央区大名にオープンした「フクオカグロースネクスト」は、起業したい人や新しいことにチャレンジしたい人を応援する施設で、大名小学校の校舎を活用しています。大名小学校は明治６（1873）年に開校した歴史ある学校で、現存する鉄筋コンクリートの校舎は昭和４（1929）年に建てられたもの。あちこちにアールデコ風の装飾が残り、レトロな雰囲気を漂わせています。

　１階には誰でも自由に利用できるさまざまな施設が入居しています。起業に関するあらゆる相談を受け付ける「スタートアップカフェ」や、ホームセンターと手づくり雑貨のインターネット販売会社が共同で設立したDIYスタジオ、美味しいコーヒーが飲めるカフェ、夕方からビールやスパークリングワインが楽しめるスタンディングバーもあります。

　２階、３階にはスタートアップを目指す企業や団体がたくさん入居しています。オフィスは教室をいくつかに区切ったもので、昔懐かしい校舎の廊下に会社の看板がかかっているのがユニークです。施設内ではさまざまなセミナーや交流会、ワークショップなどが毎日のように行われており、これらをきっかけに新しい交流や取り組みが生まれることもあります。

　繁華街の真ん中にある大名小学校の場所は、福岡の都心に残された貴重なオープンスペースです。交通の利便性が良く、起業を目指す人だけでなく、誰もが気軽に立ち寄れる立地。オープン以来、予想以上に多くの人がこの施設を利用しています。「フクオカグロースネクスト」は土地の活用が具体的に決まるまでの期間限定でしたが、利用者に好評なため、施設の一部存続が検討されています。
