Central Children's Center: Fun for All Ages

Located in downtown Tenjin, the popular Fukuoka City Central Children's Center is the only such facility in the city. The facility, closed since its demolition in 2014, reopened this April and has been given the moniker of Aikuru. Aikuru is a coinage based on the words aikurushii (adorable)— like the smiling faces of the children—and ai ni kuru (come to meet)—in reference to the facility’s role a meeting place for people of all ages.

The new center is not only a place for kids’ activities; it also serves as a venue where parents can receive child-rearing support. It has a fitness room with a bouldering wall and other exercise equipment, a multipurpose room, a rehearsal room, an arts and crafts room, study booths, and a small library. You can also borrow unicycles and roller skates for use in the open-air rooftop play area.

Another important role of the children’s center is as a provider of childcare support services. There is an hourly drop-in childcare service for infants and toddlers as well as occasional childrearing consultations and seminars. Throughout the year, a wide range of events, including puppet theater shows and toy repair workshops, and club activities (e.g., dance, crafts, shogi (Japanese chess) and more) are held.

Although the old center gave the impression that services focused on small children and elementary school students, the new center is attracting more users from junior and senior high schools. The first three floors of the building in which the center is located are occupied by private businesses, including Kyushu’s first-ever Sony Store. Some of the IT companies in the building also hold workshops for kids, so be sure to stop by and check out the new-and-improved Central Children's Center. It's fun for all ages!

子どもも大人も楽しめる児童会館

　福岡市内では唯一の児童会館であり、天神の真ん中という便利な立地から親子での利用者も多かった福岡市立中央児童会館。建て替えのために2014年から休館していましたが、今年４月にリニューアルオープンしました。新しい施設の名称は「あいくる」。子どもたちの笑顔があふれる「愛くるしい」雰囲気と、世代を問わず「会いに来る」場所にという２つの意味が込められています。

　児童会館は子どもたちの遊びや活動の場として、また子育て支援事業の場として機能しています。ボルダリングなどの遊具を備えた体育室、さまざまな活動に利用できる多目的ルームや音楽室、工芸室、また自主学習ができる学習室や図書コーナーも備えています。屋上には青空の下で遊べる広場もあり、一輪車やローラースケートを貸し出しています。

　施設の開放だけでなく、子どもたちに関するさまざまな事業も児童会館の重要な仕事です。乳幼児を預かる一時預かり室があり、子育て相談会やミニ講座などを開催して子育てを多面的に支援しています。また人形劇やおもちゃの修理など、年間を通じて多彩なイベントやクラブ活動が行われています。クラブ活動ではダンスや工作、将棋など、年齢に合わせて選べるようになっています。

　以前の児童会館は乳幼児から小学生向けというイメージが強かったのですが、リニューアル後は中高校生の利用者も増えています。また建物の１～３階には民間の商業施設が入っており、九州初のソニー直営店「ソニーストア」がオープン。入居しているITやデジタルテクノロジーの企業では子ども向けのワークショップなども開催されています。子どもから大人まで楽しめる施設に変身した中央児童会館に注目です。
