Signs of Summer

The Fukuoka Jo Gakuin Junior and Senior High School, a school for girls commonly known as Mission by the locals, is an institution rich in history and is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year. The original establishment was founded in 1885 by missionary Jenny Gheer in Fukuoka’s Inaba-cho, now known as Tenjin 2-chome. It moved to Tenjin-machi in 1888 to occupy the only building with Western-style architecture in Fukuoka. The school is famous for being the first to introduce sailor-style uniforms in 1921. The headmistress at the time, Elizabeth Lee, came up with the idea because they facilitated physical movement.
While the story goes that they were the first to adopt the sailor-style uniforms, documentary evidence has been discovered stating that Heian Jogakuin St. Agnes' School in Kyoto introduced a one-piece sailor uniform in 1920. Thus, to be precise, Fukuoka Jo Gakuin came up with the first sailor uniform with separate blouses and skirts. The students change from their navy blue winter uniforms to the summer uniforms on May 18th, the anniversary of their founding. These sky-blue gingham summer duds have short sleeves and are very popular with the students. When you see the sky-blue uniforms on the street, it’s an early sign that summer is approaching.
The school events on May 18th, the May Queen and the Maypole Dance, are another familiar sight for Fukuokans. The May Queen event is as its name suggests, and the student body selects the queen every year from among the second-year junior high school students. The other second-year students perform the Maypole Dance. Twenty-four streamers, half red and half white, are suspended from a 3.5-meter high metal pole. The students dance as they wrap the streamers individually around the pole. When they’re finished, the pole resembles a red and white trellis. The dance was originally a traditional custom in the West celebrating the coming of spring. The school began their own version of the dance in 1916 on the anniversary of their founding. This year, once again, the girls in gingham sailor uniforms will perform the Maypole Dance on May 18th—and anyone can come and watch!

福岡の街に初夏の訪れを告げるもの…

　福岡の人には通称「ミッション」と呼ばれている福岡女学院中学校・高等学校。今年の2010年で開校125周年を迎える歴史のある学校です。1885年、現在の天神2丁目、福岡因幡町に宣教師だったジェニー・ギール女史により創立されました。1888年には天神町に福岡唯一の西洋館だった新校舎を建てました。この学校で有名なのが、1921年にセーラー服を制服にしたことです。当時の校長だったエリザベス・リー女史愛用の活動しやすい洋服をもとにセーラー服を考案したといいます。

　実は、全国初のセーラー服は福岡女学院と伝えられていたのですが、1920年に京都の平安女学院がワンピース型のセーラー服を制服にしていたという文献が見つかったそうで、現在の上下セパレート型のセーラー服は福岡女学院が全国初ということになったようです。福岡女学院では紺色の冬服から、創立記念日である5月18日から夏服に替わります。水色のギンガムで、半袖のセーラー服が大人気。この水色半袖セーラー服が、福岡の町に初夏の訪れを告げてくれるのです。
　
　もう一つ福岡の人にお馴染みなのが、5月18日の学校行事。メイクイーンとメイポールダンスです。メイクイーンはその名のとおり、5月の女王。現在のメイクイーンは中学2年生全員の中から生徒の間で選出されるとか。そしてクイーン以外の中学2年生全員がメイポールダンスに参加します。高さ3.5メートルのポールに紅白12本ずつの布を下げ、それを1本ずつ持った生徒たちがダンスをしながらポールの回りを回ると、布がポールに巻き付けられて赤白の格子模様ができるのです。このダンスはもともと、欧米の春の訪れを祝う伝統行事。福岡女学院では、これを1916年から創立記念日に始めました。今年も創立記念日に、ギンガムのセーラー服に衣替えした女学生のメイポールダンスが見られます。一般入場もOKです。
