Love Earth Clean-up originated in Fukuoka

June is "Clean-up Month" in Fukuoka Prefecture, with many environmental projects taking place. One of these is Love Earth Clean-up, an event which encourages members of the community to clean up public spaces. It's simple and fun volunteer work, and anyone can participate! Love Earth Clean-up is now held all over Japan, but did you know it originated in Fukuoka?

It all began in June 1990, when a group of Fukuoka residents came together to clear local beaches of litter, dubbing their project "Clean The Beach." The "Club of Rome Conference," held in Fukuoka in May 1992, put environmentalism further into the spotlight with its focus on "Global Environment and Community Activities." As a result, the first Love Earth Clean-up Kyushu event was held on Sunday, May 17 of that year. According to press reports, more than 103,000 citizens and 545 companies and organizations from Fukuoka and Saga participated in the campaign, collecting a whopping 940 tons of waste!

Since then, Love Earth Clean-up has been held every June. This year it will take place on Sunday, May 31st, from 9:00. Local beaches, as well as the Tatara River, the Naka River, the Muromi River, Kego Park and Reisen Park will be clean-up sites. Rubbish bags will be provided by the executive committee - all you need to bring is a pair of thick gloves. So get your family and friends together and join in, we look forward to seeing you there!

ラブアース・クリーンアップ活動は福岡生まれ

　６月は環境月間！福岡でも環境について考え、行動することが増える月です。毎年、５月～６月に行われているのが「ラブアース・クリーンアップ」キャンペーン。誰でも、かんたんに楽しんでできる環境のボランティア活動です。今では全国に広がったこのキャンペーンですが、そもそもの始まりは福岡だったことをご存じでしょうか？

　平成２年（1990）6月、「クリーン・ザ・ビーチ」の名称で福岡市近郊の海岸清掃を行ったことが始まりだそうです。平成4年（1992）5月に開催された「ローマ・クラブ福岡会議イン九州」をきっかけに、会議のテーマである「地球環境と地域行動」の実践として、市民、企業、行政が協力し合って、九州一円の海岸で大清掃キャンペーン「ラブアース・クリーンアップ九州」を実施しました。当時の新聞をひもとくと、実施は5月17日日曜日、福岡県から佐賀県にかけての海岸で行われた一斉清掃に参加した人数は、なんと10万3,141人、企業や市民グループなど545もの団体が参加したとのこと。集めたごみは940トンにものぼりました。

　それ以来毎年6月の環境月間に「ラブアース・クリーンアップ」キャンペーンが行われています。今年は5月31日（日）午前9時から受付が開始されます。清掃場所は海岸だけではなく、多々良川や那珂川、樋井川、室見川の河川や都心の冷泉公園、警固公園、大濠公園などでも実施されます。家族や友だちと軍手を持って近くの清掃場所に行けばOKです。この場所をほかに、自分たちで場所を決めて掃除をすることもOK!ごみ拾いで使用するごみ袋は実行委員会で用意しています。
